Filament is a new kinetic sculpture made in 2022. It is about five feet in diameter and adds together three waveforms. Two waves act radially in and out, while the third goes up and down. The top mechanism has a single small electric motor that acts through levers and a complex string pattern to give the motion. One of the challenges was that the lower aluminum elements had to squeeze together when they got close, and then spread apart as they got far away. I played around with a few different ideas but settled on spheres made of two aluminum rings that can nestle together. I made all the parts by hand in my shop in Emeryville. It runs like a champ and makes a soft lovely sound.
